I grew up in a loving home with Mom, Dad, two older sisters and a twin brother with a cat and dog in Middle America.

School was always a character building experience for me and the support of my family and friends combined with a lot of tenacity earned me a B.S. in Natural Resource Management and MA in Education with a Special Needs endorsement.

I love doing anything in the mountains, deserts and canyons, especially along or in a river during any season with family, friends or alone. I love music, all kinds, the louder the better.

I became a teacher because… Growing up I learned how to cope with a learning disability, dyslexia. Education theorist, Kurt Hahn (founder of Outward Bound), said it best, “your disability is your opportunity.” When I stop and reflect on being a teacher, particularly a special needs teacher I realize how ironic it is that I am purposefully putting myself back in the classroom and working with students living the experiences that nearly broke my spirit. I do my best to unleash my students’ full potential.

I have an amazing wife, Alexa, that I have been married to since 2009. We have a son, Caden (5th grade) and daughter Oriah (3rd Grade) both here at DCIS Fairmont. We also have a dog named Truck and two cats; Henry and Zane. I have been teaching in Denver since August of 2005 and around the Western U.S. since 1995.

I invite you to please come visit me at school, or email me at david_miles@dpsk12.net whenever you have questions or concerns about your student and their IEP or about the Special Education process.
