| Dear Families, Welcome to Black History Month! This is a meaningful time of the year at Fairmont where we center Black Stories, his and her-stories and Black Joy!! This year our students are learning about impactful Black members of our community. We are focusing this year on learning about people we have NOT learned about in the past, and people who may be less famous but still had positive impacts. Students will share their learning with the school through a learning walk on February 28th during the day. On February 28th in the evening, we will be having our Art Culture Night/Black History Month celebration. Please stop by from 4-5 and enjoy the learning walk and the learning of our students, a special drumming performance from our Leaders of the Global Majority, and art tied to notable Black Artists. We hope you bring Black History Month into your home as well! Check out the resources below. This is a busy month too so read carefully! We need your support with our Fun Run event and fundraiser and we celebrate the 100th day of school this month! This is a day to celebrate LOVE and connection with the community. Join us to cheer on our DCIS Monarchs as they run for 35-40 minutes at the FUN RUN! ECE – 1st & MI-S:ECE-1st grade will be running at DCIS. We will begin between 9-9:30 Each class will wear matching shirts! | Physical Education, Art and Music Corner: Esquina de Educación Física, Arte, y Musica | MusicIn Music we are working on rhythm reading using snare pads as well as note reading utilizing ukuleles. ArtLast month, we met 2024 with a lot of drawing and painting! Students have been practicing new techniques in watercolor painting, contour drawing, pencil, chalk and oil pastels, and sumi inks. Students then applied what they learned to a self-guided project of their choice (the one they took home for the Original Works fundraiser). In February and March, we will be working on various forms of animation and storytelling. | MusicaIn Music we are working on rhythm reading using tambor as well as note reading utilizing ukuleles. | STEM and Tech Highlight Lo más destacado de STEM y Tecnología | STEMThe students have been busy across all grade levels exploring some fascinating topics in science!Our first graders have been exploring different forms of energy and mechanisms that involve pushing and pulling. It’s been exciting to see them apply energy and push/pull principles in fun hands-on activities in class and out on the playground.2nd-3rd grade have also been studying animal habitats, traits, and needs. The students explored the different habitats animals live in, various physical and behavioral adaptations, and what animals need to survive in their environments. 2nd grade did a small research project on Betta fish and Leopard geckos and we hope to be adding these as STEM class pets soon.The 4th graders have become amateur electricians! They have been experimenting with creating simple and parallel circuits using batteries, wires, switches,motors and light bulbs. Next, they will be learning and researching biomes – different types of ecological areas classified by their landscapes, climates, and plant and animal life. Finally, 5th grade students have been diving into photosynthesis, ecosystems and food webs. They have learned about the various roles plants and animals play in an ecosystem and how energy is transferred through food chains and webs. Their food web models created from pictures show how intricately connected organisms are within their habitats. | STEM¡Los estudiantes han estado ocupados en todos los niveles explorando algunos temas fascinantes en ciencias!Nuestros alumnos de primer grado han estado explorando diferentes formas de energía y mecanismos que implican empujar y tirar. | Original Works Fundraiser Recaudación de Fondos Original Works | Hi families! It’s time for the second round of the Original Works art fundraiser. Between today and Monday 2/12 your student will bring home a piece of artwork they made and an order form for any product you’d like the artwork printed on. This is an optional way to help fund the Art department for materials for students. Orders also make great gifts for mother’s and father’s day!
