DCIS at Fairmont

October 17, 2018

Dear Families,

I wanted to reach out and share our exciting Fall news at DCIS @ Fairmont! This year, we will be building an altar for Día de los Muertos and inviting all families to participate in our creation on the stage in the auditorium as well as a celebration on November 2nd at 4:00 p.m. We are looking to fifth graders to help lead this schoolwide creation. Look for requests for bringing in easy craft materials from home as well as mementos and photographs for honoring loved ones. We are excited to put our energy into this cultural event, which aligns with our school’s mission.

In addition, to replace our Halloween traditions from previous years, fifth graders will be writing scary stories and sharing with younger students as well because the haunted house was deemed not aligned to the work we have invested in this year—and was pretty scary for some of our young students. We hope you understand and support these changes—as always, we are thrilled to collaborate on our mission together!

Best,

Helen Butts

Queridas familias,

Mejor,

Helen Butts

First of all, THANK YOU to all of you who supported our community by responding to our last donations request of baby clothes/supplies, blankets, and sweatpants. Your donations have been received and distributed and we all appreciate your generosity so very much!

We are still in need of Clorox cleaning wipes to support our wonderful nurse, Ms. Christine, who works tirelessly to keep all of our students healthy. We also need black Expo dry erase markers (thick and thin) for our incredible Spanish teacher, Ms. Mitchell, who works hard each day with every student in the building (K-5)! If you can contribute, please do so, and know that we appreciate it! Any donations can be brought to the main office.

Multiculturalism Meets Mindfullness

At DCIS at Fairmont, the neighborhood, the region, and the globe come together to create a context for the study of art, languages, social studies, mathematics and mindfulness that spurs curiosity, creates cultural awareness, encourages communication, and inspires leadership and action.

Our goal is to expand opportunities for our students by broadening their horizons. We want to create a place where children can grow academically and culturally, a place that prepares them to excel in middle school, high school and college, and a place that will empower them to be active citizens, engaged in their communities and the world.

Core Values

Education and Technology

dcis at fairmont

DCIS is a “1 to 1” school 3rd through 5th grade, meaning that each student in those grades has a Chromebook or an iPad on which they do a significant amount of their school work.  We use apps like LightSail to read and Google Classroom to assign and grade work, and last year the 5th grade went paperless during the second semester.

We are able to manage the devices and distribute applications through MDM software, Airwatch, that gives us real-time reporting and data.  We use this information to ensure that each classrooms iPads are best tailored for the student’s needs, as well as to maximize safe and informed learning for all.  We have found that with more than 300 iPads in our school, technology can significantly enhance the learning experience when used correctly.
